Powerboat Course Descriptions

Best Boat Club and Rentals offer several US POWERBOATING certifications and training classes to get novice boaters on their way.  Unlike most power boat classes that offer only classroom or on-line instruction, Best Boat Club and Rentals has teamed up with US POWERBOATING to offer the critical component of hands-on training as part of the certifications it offers.  A variety of options exist to make training and certification easily accessible and obtainable for most anyone!

Safe Powerboat Handling -Class-room and On-the-Water Instruction 

This course is for anyone wanting to improve their boating knowledge and learn how to safely operate a small motorboat by having hands-on, on-the-water training on actual boats. This two-day course covers both classroom and hands-on, on the water training, and is a US Coast Guard and National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved course, meeting all state and national standards.

Accelerated Safe Powerboat Handling--
On the-Water Instruction & On-line Pre-requisite 

This hands-on, on the water-only course is for anyone that has taken their state's classroom boating course yet desires to have hands-on application training and experience to safely operate a small powerboat. Students are expected to self-study their state's boating certification requirements at home, and then pass a written exam covering equipment requirements, rules of the road, aids to navigation, preparation, environment regulations, safety and emergencies etc. as part of this Accelerated course.

Challenge Certification Safe Powerboat-- Already an experienced boater?

A certification candidate with appropriate experience and competency may "challenge" for the Safe Powerboat Handling Certification by successfully completing the written and practical on-the-water skills examinations for that Certification. The examination is conducted by a certified US POWERBOATING Instructor qualified as a Challenge Examiner in accordance with the standards described in the Powerboat Certification Standards booklet.

Accelerated Basic Powerboat Cruising-- "Big Boat Cruising" and Challenge Test-Out

This 14-16 hour hands-on, on-the-water course is for anyone who has completed their “Basic Powerboat Handling” Certification yet desires to gain the experience needed to safely operate a cruising powerboat with inboard engines, and improve their overall boat handling skills. Students are expected to study the course materials at home to pass a written exam covering equipment requirements, rules of the road, aids to navigations, preparation, environment regulations, safety and emergencies. This course focuses on the hands-on application of all skills

If you are an experienced small boat operator you may  “Challenge Out” of “Basic Powerboat Handling” by completing your states boating basics course and passing our Certification Challenge. Certification Challenge is a 3 hour evaluation of your boat handling skills on a small outboard powerboat by one of our certified instructors followed by a 50 question written exam.

Twin Engine Training Certificate-- On-the-Water Instruction Only

This 4-hour group or private, on the water twin-engine course is for anyone who wants to learn how to safely operate a twin engine motorboat and improve their boat handling skills on actual boats.  This twin engine directed thrust course covers the required practical skills and knowledge for the safe operation of boats with two engines.  It is designed for those who have completed level one certification or its equivalent in experience.

Night Operation-- Safely navigate the waterways at night!

Operating at night reinforces the value of standard procedures, the stowage of equipment and lines in a specific manner and place, and the ability to tie knots or cleat lines in the dark. All basic boating procedures should require a minimum of artificial light. In addition to your regular pre-departure checks, you will learn how to properly check navigation and search lights. Charts, light list and your boats copy of Navigation Rules will be discussed. You will prepare a navigation plan and conduct a crew briefing on night operations, safety and other important procedures such as:

  • Night Vision
  • Maintaining a Proper Lookout
  • Safe Speed
  • Navigation Lights of Other Vessels
  • Steering a Course
  • Night Navigation
  • Safety
  • PIW Recovery at Night

Hourly Instruction-- Need to brush up on your boating skills?

We also offer hourly instruction and training with one of our USCG Captains aboard our 21' center console. If you've never been on the water or if you feel your boat handling skills have gotten a little rusty, this is a perfect way to gain or regain your confidence.
